Thailand adventures: My favorites from Krabi

hong-island2

Holidays are best spent on a beach, with great food and having family around to share and cherish each moment- beautiful sunset views, white sand and some thrill is optional but highly recommended!

Dhruv and I recently traveled to Krabi, Thailand with my family to celebrate the holiday season. Krabi  is a coastal town on the west coast of southern Thailand with crystal clear waters, milky white sand, limestone cliffs, spectacular reef, mangrove lagoons, numerous isles floating around in the Andaman sea and some of the best climbing spots in South East Asia. It’s a favorite among adventure seekers and bagpackers.

I can easily say that I loved Krabi the most for stunning laidback beaches. Krabi, however,  offers so much more for adventure travelers- including rock climbing, snorkeling/diving, hiking, nature walks and kayaking through beautiful sea caves! My top favorites from my trip to Krabi are listed below.

Climb at Railay Beach

img_6965Accessible only by boat, Railay is amongst the top climbing spots in Asia and is known as one of the prettiest beaches in Thailand. With more than 700 bolted rock climbing routes from easier 5a’s to extreme 8c’s, limestone cliffs along the coast that shoot up from water in stunning stalagmite formations, I haven’t seen a better spot to climb! Every climb was rewarded by spectacular views that will always stay in my heart and inspire me to climb more. I highly recommend going with a climbing company unless you are confident leading a climb. Another benefit of going with a climbing company is that they know the best of routes and rent all the gear you will need. I went with Krabi rock climbing and found them very economical and helpful. The gear provided was of good quality.

The beach also offers other attractions such as kayaking through the sea caves and snorkeling/diving along the coast. And if you are hungry or thirsty during the rest hours, you have delicious Thai food available for purchase right on the beach from numerous boats lined up along the coast!

Dive/Snorkel at Hong Islands

hong-island3With so many islands off the Krabi coast, island hopping at Krabi should be on top of your to do list! We particularly wanted to snorkel and chose to do a half day tour to Hong Islands which are known for beautiful coral reef, abundance of marine life, pristine beaches and are away from the swamps of tourists.

hong island boat ride.jpgWe rented a boat and snorkeling gear from our resort and first went to the Hong Island beach where we snorkeled for a couple of hours. We later went to a lagoon on other side of the island where a lush mangrove forest in knee deep water mesmerized us. We felt we were in paradise. While visiting these islands, do remember to carry some snacks, water bottle and a picnic blanket and take in the sight of beautiful waters surrounded by dramatic cliffs and clear blue skies!

Stay at a beach resort in Nong Thale and rewind with a Thai massage

resort

We chose to stay in quieter Nong Thale which is known for beautiful beaches and slightly more upscale resorts compared to Ao Nang (which is the largest town in Krabi region and as such more touristy). We stayed in Amari Vogue resorts at Tubkaek beach and loved our stay there. The rooms were clean and beautiful. Post adventure-filled days, evenings at the resort were full of celebrations with bonfire, cocktails and great food. I also went for a deep tissue massage with Thai oils and felt so serene and rejuvenated!

The ocean at Tubkaek beach was calm and shallow for few hundred meters, I thoroughly enjoyed swimming there and loved watching sunsets standing in middle of the ocean. My heart would skip a beat at the sight of beautiful sunlit sky turning light pink and water shimmering gold. I am glad to celebrate year end at such a beautiful note and wish for an inspiring 2017, looking forward to journeys and adventures that lie ahead of me !

Which are your favorite towns/islands in Thailand and rest of South East Asia? I would love to hear more as I plan my next South East Asian adventure!
